Renunciation of Indian Citizenship

Who must apply

India does not allow dual citizenship. Indian nationals who acquire foreign nationality, and persons of Indian origin who once held Indian citizenship, must formally renounce it and surrender their Indian passport to obtain a Surrender Certificate.

If the passport is not available for a justified reason, submit the passport details on the prescribed form to receive an Acknowledgement instead.

Surrender your Indian passport immediately after acquiring foreign nationality. A penalty applies if it is surrendered more than three years later, or if the Indian passport was used for travel after acquiring foreign nationality.

How to apply

  1. Apply online for “Surrender of Indian passport” on mportal.passportindia.gov.in/gpsp, print the form and sign it.
  2. Attach one photograph, the original Indian passport with copies of its bio-data and visa pages, a copy of your current foreign passport, the naturalisation or citizenship certificate and a copy of address proof.
  3. For minors, also attach copies of both parents’ Indian passports and a notarised parental authorisation.
  4. Pay the fee and submit the application at the Consular Section.

A copy of the Surrender Certificate speeds up later visa and OCI applications.
