About Us Renunciation of Indian Citizenship

Under Indian laws, Persons of Indian Origin, who have held the citizenship of India in the past, or those Indian Nationals who are in the process of acquiring foreign nationality, are required to formally renounce (give up) their Indian Citizenship. Such applicants, who fall within the jurisdiction of this Embassy, are required to surrender their Indian passports to the Embassy to obtain a Surrender Certificate in lieu thereof. The applicants, who do not have their passports available for justified reasons with supporting documents, may furnish their passport details in a prescribed form to obtain an Acknowledgement instead.

It is in the interest of former Indian Passport holders to renounce Indian citizenship as soon as possible in order to expedite issuance of visas to them as and when required as they will not have to wait for renunciation of Indian citizenship. Issue of Overseas Citizenship of India will also not be delayed if Indian nationality is renounced in time and copy of Surrender/ Acknowledgement slip is submitted along with OCI application.
