A piece of India in Venezuela 43 years ago, Father Bernard Karikamury (born in Kerala) arrived in Venezuela. After spending a few years in Yaracuy and Los Teques, Father Karikamury arrived in Araira, near Caracas in 1980. He built the first Church in Araira, which was inaugurated in 1982 in the presence of the then President of Venezuela. Father Karikamury worked tirelessly for the betterment of the community of Araira. He built a Vocational School and a Children’s Home. Father Karikamury continued to work for the community till the last days of his death in Araira in 1991 due to cancer. He is still remembered fondly by the people of Araira who would be marking his 25th death anniversary this year through a special event in his honour.

Ambassador and his spouse visited the Church, the Vocational School and the Children’s Home built by Father Karikamury. They met the teachers, staff and children. The Embassy would provide assistance in building of additional rooms for the Children’s Home.
